The Taste of Vietnamese People Varies By Different Region

Updated: Sep 2, 2020

Northern Region

Since the climate in the North has 4 distinct seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter, the cuisine in this region is often a perfect combination of different seasonings and flavours rather than being biased toward one particular taste: salty, spicy, sour, bitter, or sweet. Therefore, dishes in the North are said to be mild and well-balanced in compared to the two other regions.

Central Region

The Central region is characterized by harsh climate with a lot of storms and floods, making it difficult for locals to work for their livings. Therefore, it is said that they season their dishes very spicy and salty in order to eat less every meal so they can save money. Chillies, black pepper, and shrimp sauces are the most used seasonings.

Southern Region

As for the South, the weather is often hot and humid, making the people living in this region tired easily; therefore, Southern people add a lot of sugar to their dishes in order to get energized. Besides sugar, coconut milk is also frequently used to cook.
